So since GISHWHES is over and I don't have any more fanfic on my to do list (yes yes, I have a WIP, but that's my sometimes indulgence and I'm not feeling it right now) I decided to pick up another show: Babylon 5.
Yay B5! Yes the show really picks up later in s1 and esp in s2. S1 is pretty uneven and web I, who love that show more than anything, finds s1 a bit painful to watch at times. Also the production values do improve. :) for what it's worth, they have a shoestring budget and actual pulled off quite a bit with it. The space scenes and fights still hold up very well, it's the green screen graphics inside the station that are the worst. But yeah, the writing and characters and 5-yr storyline are what the show is really about, and those really pick up later. The production values in s1 aren't much to write home about, but they def get better later
( ... )
Cool. :) Enjoy! I sometimes wish I could watch it again not knowing what was going to happen... it's been so long, and I've seen it so many times. It's one of those shows that is great to re-watch because of the foreshadowing and character development. But it'd be fun to go in blind again! I barely remember my first time watching.
I have a soft spot for classic sci-fi shows and movies, even with the bad special effects. I'm in it more for the interesting stories and characters, anyway; bad effects are something I can endure. I haven't watched Babylon 5, though.
The first season is mostly the backstory. You get told things you don't get until much later and a couple of things turn totally around in the later seasons. But it don't rip your heart out like Spn.
I think the reason why s1 is so questionable is because it's trying so hard to establish the characters without really starting to push the series arc story. S2 is probably patchy for the same reason, but with the changeover from Sinclair to Sheridan, more plot movement can happen.
