Review: 8x1

Season gr8 has potential, but it's one episode in so who knows what they'll do with that potential.  I enjoyed the episode, but I wasn't blown out of the water by it.

I'm afraid there were more things I disliked than I liked. I'm pretty angry about it. I kind of exploded on Twitter. XD

But, you know, I feel like it'll all come together in the end, and things will be explained...

I'm just tired of everyone acting like a jerk and nobody explaining themselves or thinking about the other person's feelings. (Sounds cliche, but that's why I feel like this.)

I understand completely! Well, the main thing I disliked was Dean's reaction to Sam when he got out of Purgatory. I know he went through a really hellish time. And he's clearly suffering from having to wall up his heart and his emotions because he was living among monsters. So, I get that. But did he have to be such a jerk? That Sam decided to stop hunting for a while? Dean did exactly that, though. And then he gets mad at Sam for not trying to free Dean. How does he know that Sam didn't try? Sam had no backups, literally no one else to help him, and Purgatory--something that doesn't even exist on this plane of existence--is not a fuckin' easy thing to walk out of, so, you know...Dean could have cut Sam a little slack.

I also don't really like Benny. He just annoys me. But there's no real reason for that.

And I don't get Sam and the thing with the dogs. And that lady guilt-tripping him into running over the dog, which kind of teaches this lesson: So you can be a really good person (saving a dog), but that doesn't mean shit (snarkily

Yeah, I was with Sam on that too. I was with Sam up until the Kevin thing. Then I kinda changed my opinion.

And yeah, Amelia was one of my bullet points too. No like.

The only only thing I really intensely disliked was Channing getting killed. I'm excited to see where they go with Sam this season, and I can sympathize with his choices that we've seen so far. I can also sympathize with Dean being pissed about it. There's nothing I love more than conflict where I sympathize with both parties, so I'm a happy camper.

Jury's out on Amelia. I think she was supposed to come off as cold and harsh. It surprised me a little, but I'm glad she's not a generic nice-gal love interest. I'll wait to see where they take her.

Mostly I'm over the moon about this episode. I think they've set themselves up for a really intense season with both large-scale stakes and personal stakes. If they can keep it up and build on it (and if we get a lot of Cas, which it seems we will) I think this season will rock my socks off.

I think the point with Crowley is something like Raphael in S6. They need a bad guy who looks big to start with to take the focus off the real bad guy - in this case I'm betting Benny will be the real bad guy, Crowley is just the day-to-day trouble.

I thought that scene with Amelia was crap too - it was a damn accident! Dogs do that! They run out into traffic and drivers don't see them until they're right in the way!

I damn well hope we're supposed to not like her right off, because if we're supposed to like her, that's a really bad way of doing it, especially for Sam fans.

As for Benny... I am totally not seeing the Denny. Maybe it's because 'm already set in my ships, but I'm getting the "brother" things just fine, just not slashiness between them. I got more from the "deep abiding love" quip and Dean's concern for Cas than I got of "Denny".
