Title: Love So Sweet, Chapter 1
Pairing: Ohno/OC, Arashi/non-Johnny's females
Rating: G-PG
Genre: Romance, friendship, family
Disclaimer: I don't own any of Arashi, or anything of Johnny's Entertainment. And sorry if I've misused any Japanese phrases.
Summary: Sakurai Sho is the cousin of our heroine, the young Rina. She has not seen Sho since she was a little girl growing up in the US. But now, Rina is in Japan as an exchange student and is living with the Sakurai family. Through Sho, she meets the charming, baka power-group Arashi and falls into the strange world of the entertainment industry. She had come to Japan for her music, not for love. Never had she anticipated how much she would be changed by a certain unexpected, adorable Leader.
Ohno Satoshi certainly is not the romantic, suave type, and could really care less about love. He is content with being the extremely talented (yet sleepy) Riida of Arashi, and doing art and going fishing. But when his Sho's pretty cousin suddenly enters his life, he suddenly has something worth fighting for.

Heavy suitcases slid down the ramp one after another onto the rotating belt. Rina Katsumi’s (or Katsumi Rina’s, if applied in Japan) plane just arrived at the Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. Even though her parents had taught her their native language as a child, it was far different to hear it surrounding her, spoken much more fluently by people who were all like her. The fast paced, technological, extremely polite atmosphere was intriguing too. A pleasant, calm, magnified female voice broadcast throughout the entire edifice at regular intervals. Rina spotted her striped luggage bags, yanked them off of the conveyer belt onto a trolley, and with a determined deep breath, set off to find her cousin who was supposed to be meeting her there.
Rina hadn’t seen her cousin, Sakurai Sho, since she was nine years old. They used to have quite a bit of fun together, him acting like an older brother she never had. On vacations, he would accompany her on the beach to keep her safe, or she would watch and applaud his karaoke-ing and dance choreography no matter how bad it was. Apparently he became very busy with his education or something or other, and was always gone since then, never visiting the US again. She was told that he had a job as a newscaster, and that was all; their families had not really kept in touch.
Rina as well, had around that time, really started to excel in her music. That’s the main reason why she came all the way to Japan actually; she was invited to attend the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts as an exchange student, to study piano. Being naturally worried, her parents set her up to stay with family, the Sakurais. As far as she knew though, Sho must have been in his later twenties, so she hoped she wouldn’t be too much of a nuisance to him.
The main grand foyer of the airport was crowded with people as everywhere else, people with bouquets and presents of greeting. Rina realized that she didn’t exactly know what Sakurai-san looked like now, even though she had a picture. He was quite handsome now she had to admit (in a purely familial perspective.) With her cell phone, she dialed the number she was given.
“Moshi moshi? Is this Rina-chan? Have you arrived?” a mature male voice picked up.
“Hai. I’m waiting at the front gate.”
In only a moment or two, a slick sky-blue sports car slid smoothly to a halt in front of her. She stared into the dark tinted windows but only saw her reflection. Being described by her peers as ‘dreamy-eyed’ and a ‘natural beauty,’ and by her elders as ‘humbly elegant,’ her shiny black hair reached just below her shoulders; she had a slim but proportional build and a graceful, kind, peaceful aura about her. People often saw her as naïve at first, but she was much more mature than she appeared. Her style was romantic but earthy, preferring flats to heels and dresses to jeans. At the moment though, she looked a little fatigued from the long flight and was bundled up in flat boots, a thick peacoat, and a cashmere scarf.
A cool looking young man of middle height stepped out, dressed in a cap, sunglasses, and a casual military-style trench and jeans. When she studied his features, she could tell it really was him. She approached with a wary smile. The man was several inches taller than her short 5’2 1/2” self (and a half! Very important, she insisted.)
“Sho-san…?” The face underneath the shades spread into a charming wide grin. Come to think of it, why was he covering his face up so much?
“Rina-chan!” He bowed shortly at the waist, and Rina quickly copied him. “It’s been so long, ne? Ten years, I think!” He took her hand and shook it warmly, and then handed her a little box of candies.
“Domo arigatou!” Rina’s anxiety lessened considerably.
Sho opened the door for her and put her baggage in the trunk (in a considerable hurry for some reason). It was only 7 o’clock in the morning in early January, and so temperatures were still chilly, the skies grey and dull.
Sho got back in the driver’s seat and they drove off. Now in the privacy of the car, the man took off his sunglasses and cap. Rina stared. In person, Sho was even more good looking, just like a celebrity, she insisted. His dark brown hair was flipped just the right way, his teeth straight and white, his clothes tailored and expensive looking, and he even had an earring... Trying not to be rude, she looked back out the window at the urban masses. Everything was so busy, but very structured and stable.
“You’ve really changed since I last saw you! When you were little you were really kawaii, but Rina-chan is a pretty young lady now.” She blushed at the flattery. “How old are you again?”
“Nineteen. And you?”
“I’m almost twenty-seven.” he joked. “My birthday’s at the end of the month.”
The two made small talk about Rina first, how her parents were, how her flight was. When the subject came to Sho’s life, he gave her a wry smile.
“I do a lot more than read the news, Rina-chan... Although I hate to say it, I’m not surprised that you don’t know.”
“What, are you Yakuza? That would explain this car…” she grinned.
“No, not that.” he laughed. “It’s just somehow embarrassing just to SAY it.”
“Dozo.” she smiled.
“I’m in a pop band, Arashi.” Adding to Rina’s astonished look, “You haven’t heard of us…? We’re really popular… I thought…” He said this in a genuinely unexpected tone, not in a conceited one. He hadn’t met anyone (Asian, at least) who didn’t know who Arashi was. Even random grandfathers on the street knew.
She explained that she hadn’t, she supposed because Japanese culture did not cross over too much in the US. Plus, she hadn’t been able to keep up with pop culture in general. Sho laughed as they stopped at a traffic light. Dozens of people crossed the road at once, while he pointed out the window of the car with one of his frequent infectious smiles.
“There we are! Arashi desu!” It was an impressive, towering billboard plastered with the handsome, cool faces of five young men. Rina’s jaw dropped; one of them definitely was Sho. The light turned green again, and Rina craned her neck as they passed.
“Sugoi...!” she murmured in awe. “No one ever told me.” Her cousin shook his head, not offended at all. He turned the radio on, and a catchy, peppy song came on.
“Ah, this is one of our songs!”
“Sing, Sho-san!” Rina cried in delight. Sho grinned and started singing along to the song called Love So Sweet. His voice matched exactly and was quite nice with a deep, slightly rough quality to it; he even danced a little in his seat as he drove. Hikatte motto saikou no lady kitto sotto omoi todoku / Shinjiru koto ga subete love so sweet (Shine brighter, my greatest lady, this love is sure to softly reach you / Believing is everything, love so sweet …)
One particular solo struck her - Soko kara itsumo mieru yo ni / Kono te wo sora ni muke hirogaru kimi to no omoide (I hold out my hand to the sky so I can always see it from there / And memories of being with you spread out). She could hear the smooth voice permeate through the others combined with it, into a perfect melody. Who did it belong to, she wondered? It wasn’t Sho’s, at least.
Rina merrily laughed at this little concert. So that’s what he had been up to all these years. And that’s why he had to disguise himself earlier - he was an easily recognized idol. It was surreal.
The car passed through automatic gates, and up to the enclosed massive, modern looking house lined with pleasant shrubs. Sho parked the car next to two other shiny ones on the driveway. He helped with Rina’s luggage, and unlocked the front door.
“We’re home!” he called out into the large space. The first story was as impressive as expected, with an intricate vase on display in one corner, a big abstract landscape portrait on the wall, and then a crystal chandelier hanging over the foyer. They took their shoes off and set them aside on the marble floor.
“You made it!” A girl a little older than Rina came down the stairs. She was Sho’s sister, and Rina’s cousin. “I’m surprised you didn’t get mobbed by fangirls, Sho-kun.”
“I disguised myself very well.” he defended. “This time.”
“He risked being assaulted just for you, Rina-chan.” The girl smiled at Rina. “It’s been a long time.”
“Satomi-chan.” They both bowed a little.
“Sora!” Satomi called. “Come down here already!”
A teenage boy even younger than Rina (he was only 14 actually), rushed down the stairs carrying a big schoolbag and dressed in a stiff black school uniform. He had a spiky haircut and cool, edgy glasses.
“Say hello to your cousin, Sora.” Satomi prompted. The two youngest in the room bowed.
“I don’t think you two have ever met, have you?” Sho mused.
“No, I think--“
“-- Sorry, Rina-chan,” Sora rushed. “Nice to meet you, but I really have to… or else… I’m going… Late. School.” He was scampering around to grab a coat and a banana from the kitchen. “See you later though!”
“At least finish your sentences-!” Sho called after his little brother as he ran out the door. “Sorry about that…”
“I’m sorry too, because I have to go as well.” Satomi said as she checked her watch. She was off to school too, and soon it was just Sho and Rina again.
“Sou, I’ll show you around, ne?”
Though Rina was well off, this house still impressed her. It was as if everything was planned by an interior designer for a hotel. She was a little afraid of touching anything for fear of breaking something.
“Everything is so… pretty.” she breathed.
“Okaa-san would be happy to hear that. She coordinated everything herself.”
“Where are your parents, anyway?”
“Business trips. They’re coming back for my birthday, then going off again for a few months.” Sakurai Shun was an important government official. With the current worldwide economic crisis, he was being called all over the place to help keep the pieces together. His wife, Sayuri, was an English professor at a prestigious university, who was asked to teach overseas for a semester. Success definitely ran in the family.
At the end of a long hallway, there was a brightly lit music room with a nice view of the city below, with guitars, a violin, and a black baby grand piano sitting on the side. “You can practice all you want on this.” he said, tapping the instrument fondly. Rina ran a soft hand over the keys. “And these here are some of Arashi’s awards.” Along one wall hung numerous shiny plaques and framed platinum records, posters and pictures. Some were dated all the way back to 1999.
“What are the Arashi members like?” Rina asked, studying their faces curiously. They were all very attractive, in their own unique ways.
“Hmm, well this is the most recent picture. That one is Aiba Masaki,” He pointed to the tallest one with large dark eyes and swooshing bangs. “He is very sensitive and baka, but really great. He loves animals. - And this is Matsumoto Jun, but we like to call him Matsujun... He’s the pretty one of the group.” Rina giggled - Matsumoto was rather pretty, even for a guy. “Jun-kun can be really DoS though.”
“DoS?”
“Extremely sadistic.”
Rina raised an eyebrow. “Sou… But you get along with him?”
“Yes, underneath he’s actually very compassionate.” Then he pointed to the slimmest, youngest looking one. His smile was so adorable. “And Ninomiya Kazunari desu. Everyone sees him as the baby of the group, but he can actually be quite evil, especially with his pranks.”
The last man had a baby face that was somehow strong, and his eyes were kind. However, he looked like he didn’t want his picture taken. “And him?” Rina asked. She cocked her head to the side.
“Ohno Satoshi, Riida (leader.) I almost became the leader when we first debuted, but I lost to Ohno-kun in a janken battle.”
“What’s janken?”
“It’s like American rock, paper, scissors.” Sho carefully said. “But it’s good that way, because Ohno-kun is good at keeping us all together in his own baka way. He can really surprise you...”
Rina nodded. “So what part do you play, Sho-san?”
“Ahno, I’m the useless one.” he laughed. “And I do the rapping.”
“Nani, useless? That’s hard to believe.”
“If you see me on one of our game shows, you’ll understand.”
At that, Sho showed Rina to her bedroom. Dim grey winter sunlight filtered in the room. It was a nice size, with a generous closet, fluffy pillows and a window overlooking a park. She even had her own personal bathroom.
“I hope you like it.”
“It’s wonderful.” As Rina bowed to thank him again for his hospitality, a bright, poppy tune rang out - it was his cell phone.
“Rina-chan, gomen, I’ll go take this. Why don’t you start unpacking?” Sho answered his phone (“Moshi moshi?”) and left the room.
Rina took off her thick outerwear, dropped it on the bed, and walked to the window. Down below were rows and rows of large trees with barren, fanning branches, pristine green lawns, and neat stone walkways that looked like winding grey streams. People were out even in the cold, enjoying the natural sanctuary that was literally trapped by metallic skyscrapers just outside its boundaries. To think, she was going to be living in this intriguing place for the next few months. Smiling to herself at this heartening welcome so far, Rina went to her bags and started to unload them.
A little while later, Sho appeared in the room again.
“Sou, how are you feeling, are you hungry?”
“Hmm, a little. They didn’t serve much on the plane.”
“Do you feel like having breakfast then? Ninomiya-kun just called, and he wants to go to this one restaurant.”
“That’s one of your group members, right? Are you sure - you don’t mind me intruding?”
“I’d be happy if you came; you’re my guest after all. I’m sure you’ll like Nino-kun too… And he said he’d be glad to meet you. As long as he gets some free food. He’s very stingy.” Sho smirked.
(Ohno doesn't show up yet... But there's still other Arashi appearances! A lot of the story is about Rina.
I'm not sure who to use as a model for Rina, since I'm not too familiar with many Japanese celebrities or models.
