Something about all the clean hovering lights and intent gazes automatically induced a pretty, camera-ready smile out of Yuri despite her unease.
“Now, for our highly anticipated guests of the day - Please welcome to our set the lead actors for the upcoming film Shiawase Na No Ni: Ninomiya Kazunari-san and Shimada Yuri-san!”
With a smattering of applause from the OnB staff, the pair made their entrance underneath the lights. They sat in the middle of the desk of news anchors and bowed to the staff in the dimness. Newer employees, both male and female alike, hid their giddiness behind their clipboards as they eyed the Arashi member and mysteriously attractive actress beside him.
The head newscaster Koga opened up with a curious statement: “Our interns did some research and discovered that this is actually not your first time appearing on television together!”
Nino and Yuri turned to each other in disbelief. “Eh, douiu koto?”
“Let’s go to the VTR.”
A Music Station episode all the way from 2010 flashed onto the large monitors around the studio, showing a brief glimpse of Arashi performing “Monster” and Jolie seductively dancing to “Firefly.” In disbelief, the fleeting memories from that event came sliding back to Yuri as she watched their two-years-younger selves laugh over one of her band mate’s mistakes (See the chapter here:

“Suge, how nostalgic!” Nino exclaimed.
“So you remember this meeting then, Ninomiya-kun?” Koga inquired.
“Ma, sort of, ne. But - Yuri-chan and I never actually met, per say.”
“We just - crossed paths.” Yuri agreed. “I never imagined that we would be working together like how we are now.”
“Shimada-san just moved from Korea to Japan, deshou?” Without alluding to her idol past, the announcer continued, “To help both Ninomiya-san and our audiences become more familiar with Shimada-san, we have asked Yuri to take some pictures from her daily life to share with us.”
Peeling the first sticker - labeled ‘What bothers me…’ - off of the glass wall revealed a photo of chicken-egg rice bowl.
“Oyakodon?!”
“Ahno, I was eating with my manager the other day, and she ordered this. I REALLY hate it when chicken and eggs are mixed in the same dish.”
“Nande?!”
“Because it’s like eating the parent with its child.”
Everyone burst out laughing.
“Okashii deshou?” Nino cried in his tsukkomi way. Just like the Ninomiya Kazunari she had witnessed two years previous, he gave the atmosphere some humor with his clever jabs. “That’s just morbid!”
“No seriously, think about it…!” But no one took her side, which added to the amusing atmosphere.
“Next picture -‘Otaku?!’ Jyan~!” A snapshot of her colorful laptop. “This is what you sent in for the category of ‘current interests.’ Please explain?”
“Ma… I pretty much haven’t made any friends yet, so for now, this is what I use to reach the world. Once when a virus wiped out my data I cried for a whole hour.” Yuri answered wryly, earning more amused Eh’s from the others. “I like to surf the internet, read fashion blogs and restaurant critiques, shop online, play games…”
“Even games?! You don’t seem like that type of girl.” one commented in surprise.
She nodded bashfully. “Hountou desu. Only a select few - mostly World of Warcraft - but I do play it whenever I get the chance.”
It was then that Ninomiya turned to stare at his co-star. A nagging suspicion had grown in his gut. It couldn’t be…! But all the facts couldn’t have just been coincidence.
“… Ninomiya-san, you are a gamer too, are you not?” Koga attempted to include the suddenly quiet man back into the conversation.
“H-hai, I am.” the man stuttered, regaining his wits. “Maybe we can play together sometime.”
Upon realizing that he had already known her, something shifted in Nino’s focus. This persistent curiosity about her and wanting to be good friends suddenly made sense. The smile on his practiced lips finally began creeping up into his chocolate eyes.
At the end of the program, the sponsors and credits rolling down the studio monitors obscured Ninomiya’s features; Yuri nudged him with a snarky chuckle. Nino pointed at the cameras in mock indignation. “Oi! Who’s covering my handsome face?”
Nino insisted on saying goodbye to his manager, and ran to catch up to his co-star exiting the building. He had checked his schedule, and had a little window of opportunity. A humid summer heat wave hit their disguised facades once they stepped outside the automatic, air-conditioned doors.
“Kyo wa atsui desu, ne~” Yuri murmured, pulling her hat further over her eyes.
An idea came to mind, and he ran with it. “Yuri-chan, come with me.”
Although perplexed, she stayed a few steps behind him as he led them through the busy Tokyo streets. He kept his head down and hands in his pockets, clearly accustomed to staying inconspicuous. After a quick walk, they turned into a quaint dessert shop. Yuri did as he instructed and waited at an open table. Outside the sun shone brilliantly on the skyscrapers. Her neck turned to watch interesting characters pass by. The latest upbeat Super Junior single played from the speakers.
A smirk came to Nino’s young face as he watched her from the order counter. Was she that simply amused? With muted gusto, he plopped two paper cups down filled with shaved ice, sweet red beans, strawberries, and jelly, and drizzled with condensed milk syrup.
“Patbingsu?” Yuri exclaimed. “Is this to make up for your vending machine prank?”
Nino grimaced. “You’re still holding that against me? Go on, eat. Be grateful.”
“Well, thank you… Itadakimasu.”
A certain sense of peacefulness came upon her as the familiar flavors filled her palette. The icy sweetness was refreshing on that blazing day.
Nino studied her carefully before adding, “Actually, it’s because you said you were feeling homesick. This stuff is Korean, deshou?”
The woman slowed down and gaped. “Eh?”
“… You’re SecretSeeker, aren’t you?”
Yuri let out a scandalized gasp and nearly choked on the red beans still in her mouth. Her violent coughs drew side glances from the other customers, so she forced herself to calm down.
“N-Ninomiya-san, you - you’re - EH?”
“I’m StormMage.” he muttered oddly.
“Usso ja!” A series of distressed expressions led to Yuri folding in her seat in embarrassment.
“What’s wrong? I think it’s pretty amazing.”
“But - you know how uncool I really am!” she groaned.
“This isn’t helping your case either.” the man simply laughed at her as she straightened back up. “You aren’t going to ignore me when we’re online from now on, are you?”
Yuri pursed her lips. “No.”
“Good.” With that, he stood up. “I have another appointment. Jya ne.”
“Already?”
“Eat your patbingsu. I want to know my money didn’t go to waste.” Nino warned with a grin, before leaving her behind, speechless. While trying to decide how she could convince him that she wasn't a nerd in real life, Yuri dutifully finished the rest of her dessert.
