Summary:
What can you do when you fall in love with someone that is out of your reach, someone as distant and brilliant as the stars?  Can one dare to dream?  Singer, dancer, actor, newscaster, model.  Idol, to put it simply.  But behind Sakurai Sho’s public image is a sincere, dorky, passionate man.  Few people get to see a real glimpse of the person behind the lights, except for what he chooses to display.

Friends, sure, but love?  That’s impossible, according to the intelligent, beautiful and humble Kaori, a medical school student who doesn’t realize how much she can accomplish.  But maybe, just maybe, she’s exactly what Sakurai Sho needs.

credit: sinomerzTrying to stop the blush spreading across her cheeks, Kaori gently pressed the bag of ice to Sho’s shoulder blade and back hip; the ice would have to be compressed for at least 20 minutes.  His body began to relax.  She realized that she had been missing his presence since their last unfortunate conversation, and was starting to regret having said no.

The two sat on the couch of the hotel room in silence.  Thankfully Sho’s back was to Kaori, or else he wouldn’t be able to compose himself.  First, he had gotten beat up by a girl; second, it was the girl he liked that had rejected him only a few days before; thirdly, they were alone in his room and hopefully no one would come looking for him; and fourthly, what if this left an ugly bruise in the morning?

However, after awhile in this position, Sho’s apprehension dissolved into a strange feeling of… warmth, right in the center of his aching chest.  He liked being so close to her.  In this moment, he felt his veneer slowly shedding away.  In the dim light, they spoke softly.

Don't know who to credit, sorry!
“Thanks for everything, Kureha-san.”

“Chotto - are you being sarcastic?”

“No, I’m serious.” he chuckled.

That could have been sarcasm too, but she chose to trust him.  She shook her head.  “Iye, I’m the one who made you this way!  I should be apologizing.”

He shrugged and then winced.  Ow - not a good idea.  Sho started laughing harder.

“Eh?”

“I must have looked really stupid, being thrown so easily.  Where did you learn to do that?”

She simpered.  “I took karate lessons since I was little.  I grew up in Okinawa, after all.”  Okinawa was where karate was first taught.  “…  Yosh, I think it’s time for the ointment.”

With tender hands, Kaori rubbed the medicinal balm into his bruise and peculiarly thought to herself how lovely this moment was.  She wanted to stay like this for awhile longer.

Curious, Sho asked her about her hometown and her childhood and felt himself falling even harder for her candid disposition.  Sho gingerly turned around to face Kaori.  The dim lights set a glow about her tentative but blooming expression.

He grinned, leaning in a bit closer.  “I’m going to have to step it up.  Such shame if Kaori-chan is stronger than me!”

The sudden change in honorifics and his too-bright smile shook her back to her senses.  Why had she put herself in such a situation?  Never get involved with a patient; that was Doctor 101.

Trying to play it off lightly with a tight smile, “Wow, it’s late.  I - I think I need to… go…”  She panicked and stood up abruptly.
As she reached for the door knob she felt him quickly grab her other hand.

“Hold on,” he murmured softly but urgently.  “Let me say something, please.”

Kaori turned back around slowly but stared determinedly at her feet.  Their hearts beat violently in their young breasts.  Hands in pockets, he kept an awkward distance from her.  “This probably - isn’t the best place to say this right now, but I just - Eh?  Why are you shaking your head?”

“I’m not stupid.  I know where this is going.”  And it terrified her.

“EH?  I would never…!”  Is that really what she thought of him, that he wanted a one night stand?  He was indignant.

She breathed in frustration.  “No, not THAT.  What I mean is, whatever you’re about to tell me, you should just stop before you say anything we both regret.”

“Regret?  I - I really like you, Kureha-san, why shouldn’t I admit that?”

Why did he have to make this so difficult?  She tried to sink the butterflies in her stomach and be objective.  “So what if you do?  Do you truly think, realistically, that anything will come of it?  Would you risk your idol status for someone you hardly know?”

“You haven’t given me a chance to.”

“If anything, I’m smart, Sakurai-san.  I know my odds, and they aren’t in my favor.  Not long after I leave Johnny’s, this - whatever connection you think we have - will have been forgotten.”

It was Sho’s turn to become heated.  “Well you know what?  You AREN’T being smart right now, Kureha-san.  Have I ever done anything to lose your trust?  Do I throw a different woman out my front door every morning?  No!  Why do you write me off as some frivolous playboy?”

“Social hierarchies exist, don’t deny it.  It’s best that you - stick to your own league, date an actress or heck, even a comedian…  I’m not saying you’re shallow, but that’s how things work.  That’s the only way that would - that would be logical.  Of all people, why would you…”

Sho threw his hands up in vexation.  Would she just stop her nonsense already?  All the while, a smoldering certainty was building in his chest.

He folded his arms in opposition.  Already knowing the response, he posed, “Just tell me this: Do you like me or not?”

“What?”

“Answer the question.”

“Don’t - don’t try to confuse me.”

He scoffed.  “It’s a simple question.  Yes or no?  No childish but’s or however’s.”

She sputtered.  “S-so what if I do, huh?  That doesn’t change the fact that you’re you and I’m me and-“

Before Sakurai Sho realized what he was doing, he interrupted Kaori’s ridiculous reasoning - with a kiss.

Kaori’s shock quickly melted away with the warmth of his lips on hers.  Breathlessness, release.  And somehow, it made perfect sense.  Ever so effortlessly, like falling into a dream, she allowed herself to fall in love.

“Baka,” Sho murmured between kisses, “Why are you so scared?”
