“And… now! Jyan~!”
The sight that met Rina’s eyes could only be described as - love, in physical form, poured into this home that was now theirs, the space where they would live together, make memories, fill it up with their creative minds and souls’ content.
Ohno Satoshi had spent months with contractors and carpenters on the design and construction of the two-story house that stood before them. It was made of golden maple wood left in its natural hue and grain, with wide open windows facing the sea and other charming homes below. The sienna-orange door had a wreath of bright flowers, welcoming any guest who happened to pass by.
“You like it?”
Rina stared at the façade with a swelling heart. Then, she beamed at her husband. “It’s perfect.”
He grasped her hand - she could feel the slight reassuring pressure of his wedding ring in her skin - and he led her in through the front door.
Inside, the same warm wood grain as the exterior created a calm, comfortable atmosphere. Each space was spacious, but open, with sharp modern lines. Cardboard boxes full of their possessions were scattered around in each room. Satoshi pulled her into the center of the first floor, which seemed like a family room, and there it was - the tree. It was just as she remembered it, with the spiraling metal trunk and dangling vintage lightbulbs. Satoshi had actually been saving it for themselves these few years, just in case; his predictions had been true. He plugged it in, and it sparked to life like a giant bouquet of fireflies.
Books went in one corner, art supplies in their own space, framed pictures could be hung up later. They stocked the kitchen shelves full of pots and pans. As they put objects away in their new designated places, they could feel their lives become even more intertwined, ever more theirs.

fallske The next morning, Rina awoke to something warm and wet tickling her face.
“Mo~ Yamette yo-“ she giggled, shifting.
Beside her, Satoshi groaned and stretched drowsily. “What are you talking about?”
She cracked open her eyes, and gasped at the orange dog that was beadily staring at her from 3 inches away. It licked her nose again briefly, and scampered away with a mischievous air. They could hear the clicking of its paws fade away somewhere in the house.
“Eh? A dog?” she exclaimed, sitting up.
“It must have snuck in with the movers.”
“We have to - to catch it.”
“No, stay here… oku-san~” Satoshi whined, hugging her bare waist, planting kisses and soft protests all along her smooth shoulders from underneath the warm down covers. “It’s cold…”
“I’m going to feed it.” she smiled intrepidly like a child, re-donning her clothes. She gave her heavy-eyed husband a quick affectionate peck before searching through the sparse fridge.
Eventually, Satoshi shuffled into the kitchen with the blankets still wrapped around him like a giant cape. There was the Shiba dog on the floor happily chewing on some leftover salty rice. Satoshi came and sat at the table, picking up a newspaper absentmindedly and frowning down at the animal that was getting better treatment than him. Rina presented some hot porridge on the table and chuckled at the looks the two were giving each other - the dog was trying to warm up to the man, and Satoshi was slowly giving into its cuteness, petting it hesitantly.

shokim After breakfast, they decided to take the mysterious dog out for a walk - it would be a perfect opportunity to explore their new neighborhood, too. Surprisingly, the little dog tagged along their heels, ran around in circles but always stuck by them even without a leash; it was there of its own free will to enjoy their company, these curious strangers.
The little charming city was getting into the festive Christmas mood - green and red garlands wrapped around light poles, stores displayed little twinkling trees, colorful ornaments and holiday specials. Rina and Satoshi laughed and bowed in humor as they passed a costumed reindeer man handing out fliers for his business. Because of the slight drizzle, it seemed that no one recognized the pair, which was fine with them.
Rina found herself charmed by the quaint intimate atmosphere - employees would greet them warmly, even let the dog come in with them. Each little shop offered artful, quality items personally picked by the owners. They ended up picking up several random necessities for their home like soy candles, a few boxes of tissues, groceries… It felt so comfortable, this everyday sort of life.
Suddenly, the friendly dogged barked and scampered off down the street and into the arms of an ecstatic child. “Chibi, where have you been? I was so worried…!” Satoshi and Rina smiled at each other and shrugged - it was about time to head back anyway.
Back home, Rina called,“Satoshi-kun?” No response. “Satoshi?”
“Hm?” he mumbled distractedly, staring at the television screen. His favorite fishing program was on, reviewing the latest techniques for catching maguro.
“I think it’s time for bed.”
“But it’s still early-“ Satoshi did a double take at his wife, dressed in not much at all but a lacey number. His mouth dropped and he gulped hungrily.
“Are you sure?” she smirked.
The man immediately turned off the TV, lightly scooped her off her feet and closed the bedroom door behind them. Lost in each other’s warmth between the pillows and sheets, this was perhaps the happiest he’d ever been.
While hosting one of Arashi’s numerous variety shows, the female guest started complaining about her figure, how she was always trying new diets to keep the pounds off, to exercising each spare moment and even so drastic as having a measuring tape handy. Ohno thought back to the interaction he’d had that morning with his wife.
“I’m getting pudgy, dude… I don’t know what’s happening.” Rina grumbled. “I haven’t been doing anything differently.”
Ohno shrugged. “I kind of like it. You’re even more comfy.” He came and gave her a bear hug, sending her giggling.
… Ohno looked straight at the perfectly coiffed-yet insecure star. Though it didn’t follow with the atmosphere, he spoke frankly. Without motive but in a way which stunned the woman, the rest of Arashi and the audience, Ohno asserted: “There’s nothing wrong with a little weight. You’re beautiful, seriously.”
But soon enough, they learned the reason for Rina’s steady weight gain. Her expanding stomach was evidence enough - she was pregnant. When he’d first heard the news, Satoshi thought he was having a heart attack, but soon the panic gave way for joy. At 34 years old, he was finally going to be a father. It wasn’t even all the “Good job” winks he got from his friends. More so, he couldn’t wait for the little being, whether it be a boy or girl, that was literally a part of him that he could show the world.
Sakurai Sho and Kaori’s child had been born only a month prior, so he offered all the advice that he could. A fun fact from Sho, studies showed that the more speech a baby hears, the smarter it will be because of more developed neuron pathways. Amazed at the possibility, the normally stoic Ohno started talking nonstop to Rina’s round midsection. It made her laugh, his silliness.
One night as they sat up in bed, Rina felt a kick.
“Baby likes your voice.” she whispered. She placed Ohno’s hand on her stomach. “Say something.”
“Eto~” He leaned in carefully. “Ganbarre yo, aka-chan… It’ll be tough, to exit and all. Not that I remember myself, but…” He chuckled in his characteristic impish way. “Don’t make it too hard for mama, ne? … Can’t wait to-“ His eyes widened as he felt a light but distinct tap from within Rina’s abdomen. “-I felt it! Sugoi!”
… Ohno Satoshi dragged his feet into the house after a long day of filming and was greeted by his wife and child.
“Tadaima~!” he exclaimed sleepily, kissing both his loved ones on the forehead. The 6-month old baby, Ohno Kousuke, reached for his father’s face with a wide-eyed expression. Kousuke was a chubby, curious baby, his expressions mirroring the former in a certain “in my own world” way. He was the mildest tempered child, and charmed everyone around him.
“Kou-chan really liked okaa-san’s red bean syrup.” Rina smiled.
“Ii desu yo, ne. He’s a good eater.” Satoshi pinched his son’s squishy cheeks lightly. “I’ll ask okaa-san to make some more.”
“Can you take him for a moment? I need to change before we leave. Onegaishimasu~”
Satoshi lifted Kousuke into his arms, chuckling, “Suge, you’re huge, Kou-chan…”
Rina returned only a moment later and laughed out loud at the sight she found. There on the floor sleeping like a baby was her lump of a husband, with little Kousuke crawling all over him like he was a jungle gym. Rina smirked and gently prodded the grown man awake by poking his face. The baby copied his mother by curiously pawing his father’s face.
“Come otou-san, we don’t want to be late.” They had been invited to Youko’s clarinet concert - Satoshi’s niece was already ten years old now. Youko was planning to play a simplified version of one of Rina’s well-known pieces. In order to grab good seats, they would have to leave soon.
Satoshi opened his eyes slowly, and stared at his smiling wife; he fondly patted Kousuke’s chubby legs; the baby was now splayed on his stomach. Just a little while longer, he wanted to stay like this. He yawned; his son looked up with an open mouth at the curious noise. And, Satoshi continued to gaze up at Rina.
“What is it?” she asked.
He beamed. “… Aishiteru, Rina.” he murmured simply. “And of course you too, Plump-chan. Yosh~!” Satoshi raised Kousuke up over his head, sending the baby boy giggling.
This was their sweet happiness.
