the pothole of rage he kept locked away in cases of character-death-scene emergencies.

I always suspected that he wrote his character death scenes with a sense of evil glee, not so much rage...

I will say, I think there was probably some rage behind the penning of Cordelia's exit in S4, so it's accurate in at least one case. :)
