Lovely work.

Whenever she’d thought of Spike and love before, there’d always been a twisted warping that hewed love to pain and violence and death - and she understood that too - only it was as if his love were seen through a cracked mirror blackened with age. Very nice description of how Buffy must have felt after Spike's initial declaration...

So this fic is set at the end of season 5? Giving Buffy the reverence for life...desire to prevent pain she needed to give her life for Dawn's?

Yes, at the end of Season 5. Though not giving Buffy that reverence for life...desire to prevent pain, per se, since she's always had that, imo. It's more like Spike is coming to understand another dimension of love, one he's forgotten over the years, I think. So, more like remembering his humanity? And loving Buffy in a way she'll actually feel loved.

I really like the wry thought that she trusted him before, only as a very different sort of trust, obviously.

Love to him had meant killing for her, in her name, as a curry for her favor - but she’d never wanted death as her gift.

Somehow, he understood what she’d never taken the time to tell him.

I love that bit, that she realizes she never deigned to give him any guidance on how not to be a monster, and the last line of the fic is very fitting.
