So I snagged this from everyone on my flist finally.  There's a lot of other faves that I didn't include (like the entire cast of The West Wing) but my main loves are represented.

List fifteen of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

Buffy Summers (BtVS/AtS)
Spike ( ( Read more... )

these are a few of my favorite things, meme, my love is for buffy always and forever

Everyone I recognize (Joss, VM, Batman) have a deadpan kind of humor, and their moral code is ... eh... flexible, according to their circumstances.

Haha, this is true!

Another character who I love but left off the list is Omar from The Wire and yeah, his moral code is definitely... ~flexible~ according to his circumstances.

From the ones I recognize I would have to agree with leni_ba about the deadpan humor, but they all are also rather feisty.

I do like 'em feisty and deadpan humor is my friend.

Yes on the deadpan humor.

I'm seeing a lot of characters that do bad things/on the surface are not good people, but are actually sympathetic in a complicated way (Spike, Faith, Roger, Topher, Adelle).

I'm also seeing a lot of heroes who are essentially good, but don't find that heroism easy and have darkness in themselves and their stories/pasts/etc. (Buffy, Vmars, Batman, Eleven).

That covers everyone I'm familiar with other than Marshall. I'm not quite sure where he fits other than the humor. Though I guess in a weird way he is also a good person who does bad things (ie. sell out). So yeah, that makes sense too.

Excellent. That's really interesting how you broke it down.

I think Marshall fits best with Topher in the way they're kinda dorkish with their humor, only Marshall is such a good person at his core. The selling out thing doesn't even seem like that bad of a thing to me. I just ~adore~ him.

Yeah, Marshall was a stretch, because he sold out for such good reasons (supporting a family! Helping his wife! Wanting a happy life is not a bad thing). But I can see how he fits with Topher for sure. Oh, Topher *sigh*

Oh! Also! Something that's probably kind of obvious but worth saying:

While I broke it down into two categories, both categories are clearly linked. These are characters who have strong amounts of both dark and light in them/their character arcs. Even the "bad" ones essentially want to do good (at least by the end of their arc), but they all struggle, to varying degrees, with what that means and how it's achieved.

It's just that some are the big damn heroes of their stories, so they are mostly good characters who struggle with the badness inherent in fighting the good-but-hard fight, while others are semi-villainous/really grey characters who do LOTS of bad but struggle against that part of their nature.

(Omar, BTW, fits firmly in the middle somewhere).

In conclusion: Characters who try to do good but struggle with it in different ways because hey, being good isn't easy (and sometimes even DEFINING good isn't easy).

From the ones I recognize, I see a lot of gender-progressive characters, mostly women and one guy. (At least, I'd call Marshall gender-progressive, maybe others wouldn't.) I came so close to putting Marshall on my list. He and Lily are one of my favorite TV couples ( ... )

It's a good comment. I like. Yeah, they're broken and yet they keep going.

I love my Big Damn Heroes. And WORD Marshall is totally gender-progressive. I agree.

HA! I was going to say that smartasses were your trend, but I think everyone has it covered with deadpan humor.

Also! Get this! My heart has grown a bulge in it! Because I've had another epiphany. And it is GLORIOUS. Or at least, it makes me happy.

Smartasses, indeed. I think that's even more all-encompassing than deadpan humor.

Oooooh! Yes! I want to know more!

OK. So, for background: the boyfriend and I are watching the Vampire Diaries--we're just starting season 2. And right now, I find Stefan really annoying. Maybe I'll warm up to him eventually, but I'm not counting on it ( ... )

And I'm wondering if this is an underwhelming epiphany.

Because, maybe it sounds obvious. But the biggest truths are the most obvious! But, I think if I laid out the evidence it would be more impressive.
