Never really thought about it before

Poll Out of step.

Poll brought to you by general musing over Lift Allowance and if we count working as when we walk into the building as opposed to when we turn up in the office. For example, I'll quite often be at work for 10-15 minutes before I get to my desk due to random queries in the corridor. At which point general thoughts on transport came into the

Because I drive to work I aim to get here for 8.45 and then park by the building but if I get here later because of traffic I tend to stay and make up the time. Unless I'm owed a bit from the day before or something. I've never really thought about what happens if the train is cancelled or something. My immediate reaction is "tough tittie" but it appears I am out of step with others on this.

If they're paying you, I figure they're entitled to the time. Unless you feel it reasonable for them not to pay you if the train is cancelled.

2) assume this is dealing with werk emails while on the bus...

I've always taken it that arrival at the site is the start of werk time -- and however long it takes to reach the desk is part of the employer's use of werk time. Likewise, a reasonable amount of social chit-chat is legitimate 'team building' and organisational culture, alongside work-related discussions.

If you're answering mail on the bus then I think you're working but not at full capacity, so it could go either way.

I think if they're work-related e-mails it's working. If you're able to use the time productively while stuck, great. (Sucks if you're in a car though...)

I generally don't 'make up the time' but then again, I work outside of my 'normal' hours a lot, and have been known to return to work when blood has arrived after I've left (and in one case was nearly home, *sigh*) in order to collect it. I figure it probably balances out.
