It figures that the one year I qualify for Can-Am on merit, it's the year that it's held an exorbitant airfare away.

Has it always been so expensive to get to Calgary?  $725 roundtrip from Minneapolis?  That's utterly ridiculous.

Sigh.  Anyone have a winning lottery ticket?

Tempting, but it would be rather difficult to take the time off from work...especially now that I've committed to a tournament in Dallas the weekend before, hehe.

I could take one day without too much difficulty, but more than that is asking for trouble.

It's looking like our side may have some difficulty even filling out the team. Such a shame, though not surprising. Flights to Calgary are obscenely expensive from pretty much everywhere in the US. Better advance notice might have helped.

I'm shocked at the cost, but to be honest it's only gone up about $200+ from what Calgarians have paid historically to get to Scrabble tourneys in the US. When I'd fly down for tournaments in the US from Calgary (when I lived there) it was normal to expect about $100 - $150 CAD extra just for crossing the border. $500+ to get to Nevada, California, Florida, Arizona, Ohio and New York is pretty much what any of us paid to get to Nationals or other notable tournaments like Albany.

It really sucks. I'm grateful for the additional travel opportunities I have (albeit few) now that I live in British Columbia. I have the option of driving to Vancouver, Bellingham or Seattle to get cheaper fares when Kelowna is too expensive. In Calgary you're locked in, and the airlines know it, hence the cost.

That's disgusting. Northwest/Delta has a number of direct flights between Calgary and Minneapolis, and there's absolutely no way it should cost that much.

I remember paying $600 round trip to get to New Orleans from Calgary back in '04 and thinking THAT was ridiculous...times be a changin'

Our population base is so small that yeah, it's brutal to fly anywhere in the states costwise. In Saskatoon we've got it even worse because for 95% of destinations, we have to fly to Toronto (even to go somewhat west some times!) or to ...Calgary, thus reducing it to the previous problem at additional cost and time.

Hey, I choose where I live, it's cold in the winter and it's expensive to fly. Obviously there are some things I consider compensating factors, so I can only complain so much about plane fare :)

I'm stunned by how far north Calgary is. Ouch.
