Looking back, it's strange to think this is something I heard from an adult... but he, and I by extension, wanted to be a hero.

Not at all. He once told me his impossible, youthful wish to create a world where no one had to be killed, and I offered to take that burden on myself. The absurdity of it is nostalgic.
