Wall-E totally looks like the robot from "Short Circuit"... minus the cheesy 80's style

And yeah, there's no denying the Johnny 5 resemblance. I'm guessing they did it for the same reason: the ability to bend his eyes like binoculars gives them a lot of expressiveness from a robot.
