Kate Winslet is gorgeous ext_6651791 October 28 2024, 11:31:58 UTC
I've seen this complaint here and there -- Ebert raises the issue, that Kate Winslet is Ms. Fan Service, and cannot play a plain woman, it's outside her range, it's a stretch. I feel that the whole notion that this character 'Sarah' is plain is largely in Sarah's head, she's insecure. Of course if a movie has eloquent and literary narration that is deliberately confusing just to be witty, then okay, that's confusing! The controversy though, ain't really about whether Kate Winslet is gorgeous. The movie devolves in a less than 'mature' way, deliberately, and then the narrator is opining upon whether Sarah needs to tweeze her eyebrows and such -- this is when Sarah is having a panic attack upon the realization that her competition is Jennifer Connelly. It used to be that Sarah was thinking of herself as an anthropologist, and her distance has evaporated, it comes to this. The movie's just messin' with ya. Consider: is it a drama or a comedy? Kind of a trick question..
