If you're going to be doing a lot of feminist music critiques in your lifetime, "Feminine Endings" is REQUIRED reading. It's a little heavy on music theory that might not interest you, at times, and I don't necessarily agree with her interpretations, but I found it very enlightening: http://www.amazon.com/Feminine-Endings-Music-Gender-Sexuality/dp/0816641897/
We didn't have to read it at UCSC but it was recommended especially to me by a professor and I loved it. I even considered going to UCLA, where the author is, for grad school (but I'm completely done with school.) She writes about everyone from Bartok to Madonna.
Oh, a Southern writer from the '50's-60's. Very Catholic. A lot of her stuff, as I take it, is fuled by the idea of original sin-grace-redemption, that sort of thing. I've read a few of her stories now, and she has quite an eye for character and irony.
Her first name was Mary, but professionally, she went by Flannery, which was her middle name. She had lupus, which both truncated and fueled her sadly short career. One of those, "well, I'm dying, so I better get at it!" sort of things.
