I think Sinclair's character manages to be lovable in the book because he's not at all full of himself, is apparently unaware of his incredible awesomeness, and is perpetually bemused by all the people falling over themselves to tell him how wonderful he is.

I thought Sakai's story was really good, apart from her rather sudden decision to become a Ranger.

The Marcus parts were awesome.

You're right, the only reason it works is because Sinclair's just so gosh darn humble! ;-)
