Chapter Thirteen
“The nanogenes will clean up the mess and switch themselves off - because I just told them to. Nancy and Jamie will go to Doctor Constantine for help - ditto - all in all, all things considered - fantastic!” The Doctor declared as he swept into his Tardis, dancing around and grinning.
“Look at you, beaming away like you're Father Christmas!” Rose giggled.
“Who says I'm not, red-bicycle-when-you-were-twelve?” Joked the Doctor smirking as her eyes grew wide.
            “What??” Rose couldn’t believe him.
“And everybody lives! Everybody lives!” He was full of excitement. “I need more days like this.”
“Doctor...” Rose began softly, glancing over at Ianto who was simply standing there.
“Go on, ask me anything. I'm on fire!”
“What about Jack?” Ianto finally spoke.
The Doctor froze, staring at his two companions, he began to work quickly, ignoring them.
“Why'd he say goodbye?” Rose whispered.

Jack sat silently in the control chair of his spaceship. He was far enough away now that the only person who’d feel the explosion was him-and even he wouldn’t feel it. He closed his eyes, wishing he could make it right. But then-maybe he was. He couldn’t help but think maybe early death was penance for whatever he’d done those two missing years, for letting go of his little brother, for everything he’d done ever. For hurting so many people. Tears began to fill his eyes as he looked at his computer. “Okay, computer - how long can we keep the bomb in stasis?” He asked softly.
“Stasis decaying at ninety percent per cycle. Detonation in three minutes.”
“Can we jettison it?” He asked desperately, he didn’t want to die. He may not have much to live for, but he didn’t want to die.
“Any attempt to jettison the device will precipitate detonation. One hundred percent probability.”
Nodding, Jack closed his eyes, swallowing thickly. “We could stick it in an escape pod.” He whispered, tears beginning to slip down his cheeks. His mind towards that amazing Welshman he’d met. The bitter look on the young man’s face, barely thirty and he’d been so angry. Jack felt ashamed to be hated that much by someone as young as him. At thirty-five, Jack realized he’d gone drastically wrong in his life.
“There is no escape pod on board.” The computer replied.
“Did you check everywhere?” His voice rose an octave.
            “Affirmative.”
            “Under the sink!” He cried.
            “Affirmative.”
“Okay. Out of one hundred... exactly how dead am I?” He whispered softly, losing all hope.
“Termination of Captain Jack Harkness in under two minutes. One hundred percent probability.” He closed his eyes at the response and nodded.
“Lovely. Thanks. Good to know the numbers.” He whispered.
            “You're welcome.”
“Think we'd better initiate emergency protocol four-one-seven.” He murmured.
            “Affirmative.”
A moment later a martin appeared on his dashboard. Accepting it he took a sip and gasped. “Oo, a little too much vermouth. See if I come here again!” He laughed quietly. “Karma’s a bitch.” He whispered. Taking the olive he ate it and sat there quietly for another moment. “Funny thing... last time I was sentenced to death, I ordered four hyper-vodkas for my breakfast. All a bit of a blur after that. Woke up in bed with both my executioners. Hmm, lovely couple. They stayed in touch! Can't say that about most executioners.” He smirked. “Anyway, Thanks for everything, computer. It's been great.”
He didn’t notice the strange sound in the back of his ship, or feel the tears dripping down his cheeks. It was the sound of Glen Miller drifting back to him that caused him to whirl around. It couldn’t be-he wasn’t worth it-was he? He was stunned to see a ship there, the doors wide open, inside Ianto was dancing Rose around the console room, while the Doctor chuckled softly.
“Well, hurry up then!” Rose called out grinning. Ianto chuckled as he handed her off to the Doctor.  “Right, and turn...” She instructed her Doctor. A moment later their arms were in a twisted mess. “Okay, okay, try and spin me again, but this time - don't get my arm up my back!”
“No extra points for a half-nelson.” Joked Ianto softly.
“I'm sure I used to know this stuff.” Complained the Doctor, he looked over at Jack and snapped. “Close the door will you. Your ships about to blow up-there’s gonna be a draught.”
Jack looked around in surprise as he closed the door, desperately hoping they wouldn’t notice his little near breakdown.
            “Welcome to the Tardis.”
“Much bigger on the inside...” Jack whispered.
“You'd better be.” Muttered the Doctor staring at him.
“I think what the Doctor's trying to say is... you may cut in.” she joked as she held out a hand. Jack reached to take the hand, unsure slightly if he should, when suddenly the Doctor spoke.
“Rose! I've just remembered!” The Doctor grinned.
            “What?”
Suddenly ‘In The Mood’ began to blare, lights on the Tardis panel began to flash as he began to dance. “I can dance.” He grinned.
“Look more like a chicken to me.” Joked Ianto softly.
“Actually, Doctor... I thought Jack might like this dance.” Rose offered softly.
“I'm sure he would, Rose. I'm absolutely certain. But who with?”
As Rose snickered, Jack looked down, mildly embarrassed that he’s obviously been figured out. Damn it if he didn’t suddenly have hero worship. Then, there was Ianto, Jack positively couldn’t take his eyes of that man.
Jack glanced over at Ianto, while the Doctor and Rose danced around the console, giggling and grinning like two fools in love. Jack decided to take the chance and smirked. “Wanna dance?” He asked Ianto, swaying his hips slightly.
Ianto, however, just gave him a cold stare. “I don’t dance with killers.” Without another word Ianto walked away, leaving Jack stunned. Rose and the Doctor stopped, Rose’s eyes were on Jack who appeared both unsure what had just happened and a little hurt. The Doctor was watching Ianto.
“He’s really very nice,” Rose offered.
Jack snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her; he quickly put on a smile, as if he wasn’t effect by the younger man at all. “So-where’s my room?” He asked.
Rose looked at him and nodded. “Come on then, I’ll show you around.”

Jack sighed as he lay on his bed, Rose and Ianto had both gone to bed for the night, and Jack imagined the Doctor was tinkering with the Tardis. He felt his eyes burning again as he turned on his side and curled under the covers. An unfamiliar ache began to building in his chest. He’d hurt all of them, caused them so much pain and grief and now here he was lying in a comfortable bed, warm with food in his stomach. He didn’t deserve it. Not at all. He felt disgusted with himself, sickened by what he’d done.
That sweet, beautiful little boy-barely younger than Grey had been. Jack’s mind shot out to Grey, his baby brother. Running with him, he could still feel the hand slipping from his. He jumped when he heard a knock on his door and suddenly it opened, to see Rose step inside.
“I-“ She stopped at the sight of him, she’d brought him towels, and what appeared to be a few biscuits for him. She immediately placed them down on the chair beside the desk and moved towards him. “Jack?”
He shook his head, trying to turn away, too stubborn to accept anything. Rose didn’t know what everyone else did or didn’t see in him. But she knew what she saw-an inevitable goodness and ability to love. It didn’t matter that he’d disappointed her to start with. She couldn’t be disappointed anymore.
“Come here.” She whispered as she lay down in front of him. “Jack?”
He shook his head again, not wanting to lose it in front of her. Unprepared to cry in front of someone he’d barely known for half a day. She sighed in frustration and scooted closer, wrapping both her arms around him, she brought his head to her shoulder. Running her fingers through his hair, she wasn’t surprised when seconds later he was sobbing against her.
“We’re here and we’re fine. So are you.”
1941-Leaving on the Tardis: The Doctor, Two + 1
We picked up a new companion-Captain Jack Harkness, con man and charmer extraordinaire. I’m currently caught between hating the bastard and falling completely head over heels for him. He’s so---evil!
I don’t mean that in a bad way of course, he helped save the day, after nearly destroying it. But I think today was a bit of a wake up call for him. I told him I wouldn’t dance with a killer. That wasn’t exactly fair of me, I don’t know he killed anyone, I just know what he did today. It scares me to feel this strongly towards someone after only a matter of hours.
It’s not like I’m feeling lust either-course he’s pretty, that’s the FIRST thing I noticed. Rather it’s that he honestly seemed to have a good heart, but he’s so damn careful about showing it. Oi! An’ he flirts with anything that moves. That man would screw a postage stamp if he could. It’s so frustrating to feel like this, like every time I’m around him I can’t breathe.
I heard his thoughts today-I didn’t mean to but he might as well have been screaming them at the time. He felt he deserved to die, like what he’d done to us, to that boy was so horrible that he shouldn’t be forgiven. He called it penance. I’m a Catholic boy, an’ I know penance, what he was thinking wasn’t penance-it was suicide, those thoughts sounded like the thoughts of a man who wanted to die.
I don’t think he actually wants to die, but I think he’s so damn scared he doesn’t know what to do suddenly. I think the Doctor will be a good influence on him; hopefully Rose and I will make some sort of impact as well. I could tell he’s a drifter, feeling lost among the stars. I understand that, and I can’t help but feel that once I get past being angry when I’m around him, that I’m really going to like him-hell I already really like him, that’s part of the problem.
Did you ever have the feeling like you’ve connected with someone-just clicked? Sounds stupid right? I hate him and feel pulled towards him all at once. It’s maddening, seriously maddening!
            Ooops, better go-someone’s knocking.
Rose stepped into Ianto’s room, he glanced up and looked at her, she looked trouble. “You all right?” He asked as she came to sit beside him.
“I’ve never seen anyone cry like that.” She whispered.
            “Who?”
            “Jack.”
            “What?! Is he hurt?!”
She shrugged. “I don’t know, I came inside an’ he was already crying, but then I lay beside him and he started sobbing, like he had no one else in the world. Ianto-I think we did the right thing by bringing him with us. He needs a purpose.”
Ianto smiled as he pulled her close, dropping a kiss against the top of her head. “Then will give him one Cariad.”
