APE 2011

Another convention season has come and gone.

I'm planning a bigger writeup about APE 2011, with some reflections on my first con as an exhibitor, APE 2001, and I'll announce that here when it's ready to go.

Lots of discussion about the convention is going on around the web, but The Beat's a nice place to weigh in:  Read more... )

This year I actually came with about $200 in my pocket, but I just didn't find anything that I hadn't already bought in some other way. It was pretty strange, since the last time I went to APE (two years ago) I basically drained my checking account and still didn't have enough for all the things I wanted to buy!

That said, I will probably try to get a half-table next year, and actually get some of my comics in print for once. I usually don't feel like my stuff is good enough, but there were enough exhibitors there who were in it for the passion that it did inspire me somewhat.

I just hope that if I do get a table I'm not stuck in the middle of a bunch of meme-of-the-week stuff; the friends I was there with kept on getting fed up with just how much zombie-related stuff there was, and were giving short shrift to the non-zombie stuff that was simply unfortunate enough to be nestled in between two zombie-heavy tables as a result ( ... )

There's always a "thousand yard stare" that sets in at some point during any convention, too. I've had longtime friends not recognize me until they see my nametag (and vice versa). Sorry we didn't get to talk at the convention.

The best way to get my attention, for future reference, is to pull out a wad of $20s and start stacking up books from my table. (Man, I sound like such a capitalist today.)

That thread at The Beat was funny. People kept complaining that APE would do better at other venues, apparently without realizing APE had been held in those places before. "It would be so cool if APE were held at Fort Mason! Or down in San Jose! And how about moving Wonder-Con to Oakland?"

I always did poorly at APE, whatever the venue, whatever the weather. The only observation I can make about sales there comes down to the hip factor: some things are hip and sell like hotcakes. Oh, and my wife sells more of my own stuff than I do. The hot factor?
