WonderCon 2008

Feb 24, 2008 23:10

I survived my eighth WonderCon, and actually had myself a pretty good time despite the overbooking and overworking that goes into this thing every year. I'll be doing a big write-up for Animation World Network in the very near future, and I'll post about that here when the time comes, but here are my quick impressions of the show:

Vicki Lewis! She was awesome on News Radio -- I wish she were in more stuff.

I think that was the third Wonder-Con I've missed since 1990. I'm slipping! Hope to be there next year. Thanks for the report.

We'll put you up if you make the trip solo.

But be forewarned that if I'm covering the con for AWN again, I'll probably stick a fedora with a Press pass on your head and put you to work hassling celebrities on my behalf.

A fedora with a press pass? I'll buy some baggy pants and work on my Brooklyn accent.

Hey Andrew.

I think this was one of the best Wondercons ever. I was in Artist Alley and it was jumping. The whole hall was filled and on Saturday it really felt like we were on SDCC. I can't wait to have a table next year.

My worry is that as the convention grows that they will expand to the North hall at Moscone Center and that hall is above ground and across a street. Once they split the con up it will take away a lot.

I second the Vicki Lewis props! Also, Jon Favreau! Loved him in Swingers (he also wrote the screenplay, I believe). I'm juiced about the Iron Man flick.

He was the best thing about the DD movie. Iron Man will rock.

Don't you mean the ONLY good thing? But yeah, his Foggy was pitch perfect. The one bright spot in the soul sucking void that is the DD movie.

Most of my Vicki Lewis interview got wiped out, due to the $20 tape recorder that I was using, but I've still got my memories, at least.

The Jon Favreau interview made it through intact, thankfully. My editors wouldn't have been happy if I'd messed that one up.

I've never been to Wondercon, even though it's just a few hours up the coast. Maybe next year.

I think you'd have a great time. In addition to the Cartoon Art Museum, off the top of my head there are at least a half-dozen other great museums in the city, and WonderCon itself has gotten better and better in recent years.

I conducted brief interviews with about a dozen exhibitors following the con this year, and there were very, very few complaints from anyone. There's usually at least one "doom and gloom" response, but people seemed very upbeat this year, on the whole.
