Oh, good. Though given what Johnson's been saying about leaving Jim forever old, and trapped in his shell of a body, it might be more merciful if this is it for him.
There's no question about Lisa from Funky Cancercancer, though.
Yeah...I've been a fan of Funky since the early 1980s, when my sister (proud member of her high school marching band) brought some strip collections home. Tom Batiuk lives about a 30-minute drive from my hometown, too, which added another level of personal connection for me.
And now Harry Dinkle's retired, Funky's an alcoholic, Lisa's dying of cancer shortly after her reunion with her secret baby, and no one's playing frozen pizzas on turntables, the fall leaves aren't talking, and I haven't seen a good air guitar sequence in ages.
Still, it's been a consistently good strip for so long that I don't mind the ever-shifting tone of the series, and I appreciate the fact that Batiuk's telling the stories that he really wants to tell, whether the readers want the gag-a-day stuff or not. In today's comic strip market, strips like that are few and far between.
