Re the easy divisibility of 12: it's the same with the point-scale for fonts. The size of the letters used in the Gutenberg bible are set to 12 points, for exactly the same reasons -- it's easy to know how to make one line half of the height of another line, etc.
After the French revolution, there was a push to standarize on 10 points, but that did not become popular enough.
