I refer to the coming weekend as "this weekend" and I thought that was universal.
Twitter commenter Jiski says "This weekend would make sense if it already started. You wouldn’t say ‘this apple’ if you are referring to one 3 days away etc." I completely disagree with that: you can say "this Friday" when it's not yet Friday, "this Christmas" when it's not yet Christmas, etc.
Then again, our younger daughter used to be confused by usages like "this Friday" until very recently (she's now 7) - she used to think it meant "today (and also today is Friday)". So I guess she was in agreement with Jiski and possibly with the older people in the survey (depending quite what their thought process was).
