Wait, in the UK fire-optic cables are just strung across to every home from something that looks like a tent pole? Around here everything is done underground -- yes, that requires digging and thus is more expensive (and more disruptive), but you don't have to worry about any overheight lorry putting the whole neighbourhood without communications.

Phone lines are sometimes above ground and sometimes underground. Varies depending on how urban/rural you are and how long they've been about.
