The hand-licking incident is deeply bizarre. In winter, don't normal people use (a) moisturiser; and (b) mittens? Especially for their children?

Not everyone. I've never needed it, and it took me decades before anyone explained what chapped lips were (for instance).

I'd expect mittens, but if your kid decides they aren't cold enough to wear them...
