I heard a Stradivarius being played in concert once, and it was a very interesting experience, because it was a mixed bill of music, starting from the Classical up to post WWII. In the earlier Classical and Romantic pieces it sounded astonishing. A mellow, golden, incredibly smooth tone. In the later works, Impressionist and modern, it was less and less distinctive, and in the post-WWII music it sounded no different from a good modern violin.
