At least that less/fewer example merely sounds over-formal, rather than actually wrong. I saw an example recently where presumably someone was twitchy about less/fewer and changed "less" to "fewer" even though "fewer" no longer conveyed the intended meaning: "DryDye technology is a polyester fabric dyeing process that uses no water, 50% fewer chemicals and 50% less energy than the traditional fabric dyeing process." It had 17 chemicals before, and now it has only 15!
