If Valerian is pants I shall be very sad.

Think it's probably a good idea that Uni seats in Scotland are limited though. The bums on seats policy damaged further education, and filled universities with many students who really aren't up to it, and would have been better served going into other pathways.

"One major problem with free tuition is that the government is forced to cap the number of students who can take it. Even if demand for university places was to increase, therefore, it couldn't be matched with available places."

That's not a problem, it's a good thing.
Unlimited places results in massive inflation of qualification requirements for jobs. So people spend three or four years of their life, get into debt, and can only get the jobs they could have got without a degree under a system where university places were limited.
University education isn't a consumer good that should just expand according to "demand".

I know a fair number of people who think that everyone who wants to go to university should be able to. And that it's a universal good that improves society.

I'm sure you do; I inferred, from the general societal trend and from that article treating it as uncontroversial, that it was the default/majority view.

It seems to be.

As a country we are _long_ overdue a discussion about what university is for.

If you password hasn't been compromised, it hasn't been compromised...why fix it if it isn't broken?

Well, it could have been compromised - but not used yet. Or it could have been compromised on a different system, if you reused your password.

But both of these are less likely to be an issue than forcing you to update your password regularly.
