The kosher and halal slaughter thing is deeply problematic. On one hand, it's a religious belief held by minority religions who are increasingly victimised, and it's often used as a pretext for islamophobia by people who otherwise don't give a shit about animal cruelty. On the other hand, it's a fairly unpleasant belief.

What is a right-thinking person to do, short of going full-on Dawkins and saying "all religion is bad!" which has the benefit of being intellectually coherent, and the drawback of not helping in any way?

I don't think that this is a case of religion being good or bad. I'm not ok with people being allowed to do things because of their religious beliefs, or being stopped because those things happen to be religious in nature ( ... )
