How is that cheating?

All gambling is based on figuring out patterns.

Hell, is it cheating to know that while playing black jack the odds are that the dealer will turn over a card with a value of 10 and bet accordingly?

I would say no. I have nothing for admiration for people who can successfully count cards etc.

The casino's obviously see it differently, but they determine the rules of their games, so I have little sympathy if someone manages to beat them. I do wonder if the Russian guy who got caught needed a better lawyer. What they planned to do doesn't seem to me to be fraud, just a clever use of information.

(1) anything that requires someone to stab themselves, or get stabbed, in their personal bits (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vas_deferens) is not high on my list of trustworthy options. A year is a long time, yes, but how is the partner to know when the year is up? It's not like medical appointments never get rescheduled.

(2) if one waits long enough, it won't matter whether or not one's favourite shows are in HD - one's eyeballs won't be able to tell.

(3) I think they cover this pretty well in the article, but if nothing else, what does "dependable" mean when one is 14, and what does it mean when one is 73? Or, even for the more precise word "conscientious". The authority one is expected to conform with has changed, for one thing, and for another one has a larger repertoire of previous experience for estimating whether there will be reciprocity in one's current relationships (game theory y/n?).
