The reality of being an adult was never like that for everyone

This is a misnomer. The relevant generatioin of my family all behaved like that. We are middle to upper middle class. Meanwhile, I often Live Journal, in my underroos, with the shirt I was wearing wrapped around my head.

I've got little time for people in their 30s and 40s using the word 'adulting', but I find it quite useful when talking to my 19 year old about all of the difficulties of negotiating the real world without a parental intermediary; I think it's actually ok in that use for students and other emerging adults, and not symptomatic of imposter syndrome or anything else of that kind.

I also think that this feeling of disconnectedness with adulthood has been with us all for a long time, but has probably been made worse, for more people, by modern life. There are a pile of things about the way we live now that really are just a big old muddle. None of us 'know our place' any more, and while that's a good thing, it makes a lot of this stuff more complicated.
