San Jose's "tiny homes" proposal is interesting, and I knew about it because I live near there. In a way, it's an extension of an idea that's spread around other cities in this area, of loosening zoning codes enough to permit construction of small houses in large back yards, usually intended for relatives, e.g. parents who can still live on their own but need lots of assistance. This project moves it into a government program, mass construction, intended for general homeless people. The controversy I see coming is, where will they go? The proposal spreads them around the city, but some of San Jose's council districts are purely sedate middle-class, and they're also large and sprawling, so I foresee a NIMBY effect where neighbors say, "Why here? Why not way over there?" They might also put the residents of the tiny houses far from anywhere they might want to go ( ... )

Yeah, the essay only works because it's so over the top that even the most ardent Tea-Party member isn't sacrificing _that_ many women for their livers.

And yeah, NIMBY is a problem. You really need a decent local government which will just get on with things rather than being constantly swayed.

And I love the combination of it with the polite Canadian twitter discussion which does indeed include that memorable phrase.

I'm sure that I read in the Journal of I Saw It Somewhere Studies that there is at least one academic study done with a biggish survey showing that the gender of a child had an effect on the father's views, with men who had daughters becoming not just more feminist, but more left-wing, as they realised the impact of social issues.

I suspect the "Oh, they're OK then" thing of being quite common. My late grandmother had her later-life views shaped by, among other issues, the gay couple who opened an antique shop with adjoining cafe in her local parade of shops.
