Am I Introverted, or Just Rude?cartesiandaemonSeptember 25 2016, 15:08:48 UTC
It feels like, they used to feel like they ALWAYS had to do the social thing, and then got some reinforcement that it was ok to not always be social. But then, in exploring that freedom, maybe they went too far, and didn't even do social things which they would have thought were worthwhile, even if they didn't come as naturally as they would have done to some people. So, maybe now they're trying to find a balance of deliberately do social things that help, but also giving themselves a break. Which is hard to find, but doesn't necessarily need to be a massive exercise in existential doubt.
It seems to me that the great mystery of what Corbyn meant could be solved by listening to the recording of him saying it, assuming it was an oral statement. If he emphasized the word "now," then he meant "immediately." If not, then he meant "as a consequence of."
Restricting your social interactions because of introversion isn't rude, but the article about it sure is. It's staggeringly presumptive in an "extrovert rules always prevail" way. I was also offended at the "if you've never missed a plane, you have no excuse for being late for anything else" attitude. First, I've missed a plane, so does that mean I may now always be late with impunity? That’s the logical conclusion, but no less silly for that. Second, the reason people don't usually miss planes is that they get to the airport hours in advance. If you're flying, you can pretty much give up on the idea of doing anything else that day. But you can't run your whole life like that.
Not only did he emphasize the word "now" but the journalist asked a follow up question amounting to "why immediate instead of going slowly?" Corbyn didn't really answer the question, but he didn't deny the premise, and what he did say amounted to "negotiate, yes, but if we're going to do it let's get on with it."
I think also Corbyn's political position might have been considered mainstream a few decades ago. I'm not saying it was in the centre-ground of British politics but before the coining of the term Looney Left he was just in the Left.
I don't know if the same is true of Trump. I find it difficult to determine his actual policy position in amongst the noise and fury.
