There are often rational alternatives to money pump schemes. You can insure car hire excesses for about 45 pounds annually (EU wide) , as opposed to the 25+ per day they charge if you get it with each car hire. You just need to look...

A lot of credit cards now include insurance for travel; I've seen various kinds, but the commonest is coverage for a hired car. Many people have that benefit and don't know about it or just don't remember. When I relied on it (my personal auto policy now covers me for that), I carried a copy of the card's terms with me to show agents who challenged my rejection of insurance.

For international, it is very difficult to get own-policy coverage for hired cars and it's probably better to take the insurance.

Could this be the Sam Vimes problem again? Someone who doesn't have enough money to buy a big policy, to own a car of their own, or to qualify for one of the cards with broad benefits has to buy the small insurance policies, incrementally.

I was never that stupid a teenager, or small child either. I ate food that tasted good. I did not like to eat things that did not taste good. That was the sum and total of my preferences.

I've seen that early LotR review before, of course. Its final sentences made a classic blurb.
