That Burkini thing was the biggest overblown media driven thing I've seen in a very long time. A small number of mayors geering up for the elections this spring "banned" the thing even though they knew the courts would immediately overturn the ban. They did so because they are terrified Le Pen is going to win the spring elections and they wanted to steal some votes away from her and not lose themselves. Of those small number of mayors only one time did the local cops even attempt to enforce the law and in that case the local mayor made sure that there was press there to film it. Meanwhile at 99 percent of public beaches there was no Burkini ban at all. Meanwhile the international media was like "All of france bans burkinis" even though we were talking less than one percent of beaches and even at those beaches it was a publicity stunt ban with no enforcement intention at all ( ... )

The Lohan news hit the Mail, Mirror, and Sun over here. So it's not entirely escaped notice.

She seems to be saying that she didn't call anyone about it - can't find anything about her trying to press charges:

Local papers here said she tried to. (It was a fairly big scandal.)

Even if she didn't go the police station herself, under French law he should have been automatically arrested anyway. There are cops are over the beaches and even if no cop saw it as soon as teh video came to light they are supposed to take proactive action.

I completely agree that they should have.

If the estimate  of the improved range of aircraft from plasma wings of 25% is correct then a modified  Airbus 380 would have a range close to an unmodified 777 and a modified 777 would have a range of over half the circumference of the earth. Which I think means any airport on the planet would be in range of any other airport.

Yeah. It seems like a ridiculously big change for aircraft, which I thought had been asymptotically approaching perfection for over a century, and now only allowed the shaving off of tenths of a percentage point in improvements.

When my nephew was doing his PhD he was looking at a casting technique that would have reduced engine weight by 1-2% which was considered worthwhile by the aircraft industry.

So,  yeah,  I'm surprised that there might be something with such a large potential saving.

Thank-you for sharing the "wrong emotion" link - I found that really helpful.

Am I sociopath because I read "the wrong emotion" article and thought "I have never even for an instant considered that my emotions could be 'wrong' '"? Emotions cannot be wrong (in my book) because  they don't *have* to lead to actions. You can feel and not DO. Actions, now, they  can be inadvised, stupid, cruel, unethical, counterproductive - whatever. But emotions just ARE. And they have no set or inevitable actions.

I've found that notion useful, in dealing with myself and others.

Nope. You either weren't indoctrinated into the "This is how you should feel" approach, or it didn't take for some reason. I'm really glad, because it's a pernicious mode to get stuck in, and takes most people a long time to get out of (if they ever manage).

:-)

It seems an incredibly weird notion to me, I can't even imagine it - but I'll just have to believe it's common. Lots of other things that are just as strange or stranger definitely are.

I reckon I was either immune or lucky, possibly by being around people when I was young who generally didn't do any overt indoctrination. Not out of any enlightened virtue, more because it was SO very obvious and inevitable that there is only one right true way of thinking that there isn't any need to do anything at all - the child will just BE that way automatically. My parents, peers and teachers were all rather astonished that left to think for myself, I didn't automatically think just like them....

The drugs one was fascinating.

Yeah. I think that he found something interesting in there, but I'm glad he pulled back before it killed him.

And I know how he feels about not really believing in the world afterwards. Although anyone turning on the news for more than five minutes would probably feel the same way...
