A premise for a space opera-- Moore's Law continues until chips are extremely powerful, but chip fabs are so expensive that there's only one per spiral arm. The speed of light still holds, so it's a very long supply chain. Expect pirates.

Dogs on the subway: I hope to see wheeled carriers so that small owners can still bring large dogs.

I like that idea a lot!

(Well, both of them, but the space opera one is cool.)

I was imagining a bag with legs for a large dog to walk in :)

I guess also, the dogs that are sitting in tote bags, even if they're bigger than the dogs people EXPECTED in tote bags, are being fairly well-behaved and not causing a problem, so hopefully it's all ok for the moment...

I was also imagining a walkable bag, but that would be so that the dog and owner could use steps at stations that don't have elevators or escalators.

Oh gods, the comments on that Western Culture article.

(The article itself is an odd mixture of thought-provoking and infuriating that I don't have the time or the spoons to try to disentangle right now, but I like having my thoughts provoked, so thank you for sharing it.)

That's mostly what I like that site for - the though provoking is usually interesting enough to make up for the infuriating.

I left this as a comment: 1) The captives who preferred Native American living to Western living weren’t choosing something over “Universal Culture” - because the colonists weren’t living in that culture. If anythign they had deliberately rejected the forward-moving Western European culture so that they could continue in their religious lifestyle in a new place ( ... )

Ah, I didn't get far enough down the comments to see this - too many MRA types. I agree with all of that, and thank you for managing more coherence than I could.
