Why the "Remain" campaign was so terrible

Wow, the Tories continue to remind me of the big money anti-Trump wing of the GOP - greedhead idiots who were blindsided by public support for nationalist ideas they helped stir up as a tactic to get votes but didn't really want.

I have no idea if this is merely a similarity between the modern GOP and the modern Tories or if there's some inherent flaw in how people who are pawns of the ultra-wealthy and whose job is to convince others to vote to support the interests of the ultra-wealthy think, but it's definitely striking.
