I am astounded that there isn't a law saying you have to have an armed guard at a better shop whenever it's open.

It seems strange to me.

I mean, surely former IRA members still have guns and surely some of them are criminals.

This seems like the makings of the easiest heist ever.

Maybe - but the insurance company is probably on the hook for the actions of over zealous security guards battering innocent punters.

There's a pretty strong presumption in British jurisprudence that the police prevent and detect crime and keep the peace successfully. If you're worried about being the victim of a crime then the correct thing to do, according to the British criminal justice system, is to tell the police and let them take care of it. So I don't think the judge would see it your way.
