Pressed to the Edge: Why vinyl hype is destroying the record
The interest in vinyl records utterly baffles me, I grew up with them, and entirely stopped using them more than 15 years ago because as a technology they utterly suck compared to CDs and even more when compared to being able to plug my phone into my stereo.
The warps! The ticks and pops! The fragility! The short running time per side!
The first thing I did when I got a new record was to dub it onto cassette. That way I could listen to it more conveniently, while keeping the disc undamaged. I had an outboard dbx encoder/decoder noise reduction unit that was superior to Dolby B, but was absolutely required for playback, so I could only listen to my dbx encoded tapes in my own living room.
