I'm not sure why the new trains is news. They've been known for a few years now, and they're not coming into service for another couple of years. Possibly they now know the actual time they'll knock off now they've done trial runs with an actual train?

Out of interest, why aren't they using Pendolinos (or something similar) on the East Coast Line?

The East Coast Line has much fewer curves than the West Coast, and indeed even a few completely straight bits that were built for high speed.

also there's a bridge over the Tyne that's too narrow for them
