Given that Oculus Rift is basically doing the same trick as the Hasbro My3D or Google Cardboard, I think they protest too much. In fact, when I got to use OR development kit I said 'the motion here is worse than on the Hasbro My3D and the resolution is worse'. A couple of years ago now, and I'm sure the new kit is better, but I still think that systems that are based around dedicated screen hardware are, in the end, going to lose out to systems where you slot in your phone. Very few people are excited enough about VR that they'd rather spend a fortune than wait for phone-based solutions.
