If your employer has a policy that the network connection can only be used for work-related stuff (which is rare nowadays), and they suspect you are up to no good, then they can check your messages, conclude you do not conform to the policy, and take appropriate action.
For all the rest of us, we have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the workplace.
