Hmm. Looks like the Star Trek fan-film fuss is rather more complicated than originally reported. It does sound like the production company have shot themselves in the foot in their statements (and they really should have thought a bit more carefully about the Kickstarter rewards.) It would have been nice if everyone concerned had got together and hashed it out, though. It doesn't look like something that couldn't have been fixed with an adult conversation (on both sides), followed by an apology and clarification. I wonder if the Kickstarter success went to their heads a bit; as soon as someone starts making grandiose statements about being better than an ordinary fan film, it can come across as kicking other's efforts.

Yeah, it would be nice if people actually talked about this stuff.

Heck, if Paramount just charged a licensing fee to anyone who wanted to sell fanfic the results would undoubtedly be _really_ interesting.

Apparently that's mandatory for music? Which I still don't understant. I don't know HOW we ended up in the situation where derivative works are by default ok for music (??) but by default verboten for everything else...

Accident of history.

But I do wish it was true for all media.

I can add my mite as an American of the same generation as the "refragmentation" author that everything the article says sounds about right to me. What I can particularly testify to is the blandness and sameness of the consumer offerings. Grocery stores were dire and desolate places, even with their shelves packed. So many things, and so many types of restaurants too, started making their appearance around 1980 ( ... )

I am generally grateful I was not born at any point further in the past than I was.

And would frankly be happy to push it forward a few decades (providing there isn't an apocalypse around the corner).

Holy crap! Coming out as an ex-Muslim sounds a lot harder than doing the same as an ex-Catholic was. My parents brought in a priest to talk to me and every now and again would bring up the idea of my return. But other than that, they were no ructions.

I suspect it depends on the family. And the country.

But yeah, my understanding is that becoming an Ex-Muslim is a few decades behind becoming an Ex-Christian.

Apostasy is a criminal offence in several Muslim countries and in theory carries the death penalty in some. It's a huge deal.

That ballet comment was not the one I was expecting -- which is the one where they point out that ballet dancers are athletes at the top of their game, they're strong as fuck, and they train for 4-5 hours a day, more on non-show days.
