That second strip with Franklin in it had me laugh out loud. It's been a long time since I've sat down and read Peanuts and I'd forgotten how good it can be when it is good.

On the subject of latkes, everything I knew about them was correct. I did however learn quite a bit more about them, and hopefully this broader knowledge is still equally correct.

I still fry latkes in Crisco. It is the traditional way of my people. Olive oil is great stuff, and I use it frequently - but not for latkes. Doesn't belong there.

The David Michaelis biography of Charles Schulz mentions, briefly, the introduction of Franklin, but says nothing about this story of the request or inspiration. Michaelis holds that Schulz insisted that he never accepted ideas or suggestions for his strip, save for one minor gag he once picked up from a friend, and the biography refuses to contradict this position.
