Two thirds of people have Herpes Simplex, I find that absolutely astonishing.

And yeah, the alcohol and tobacco industries are I think the two biggest reasons why other drugs are illegal.

"Everything happens for a reason" -- yeah, well, if I die and suddenly find myself conscious and standing in front of some pearly gates, I'm going to punch the fuck out of the asshole responsible for cancer, dementia, war crimes, and hemorrhoids. That, or turn my back and donate my soul to the Guy Downstairs.

I have cold sores: got them from my Mom who got them from her Mom etc etc. Not enough known about transmission when my Mom was young, so my Dad has them. I have managed to not give them to my SOGP ( - but I have managed to pick up a horrible non-lethal skin infestation from him, that he got from his Mom). At one time the assumption was that everyone got cold sores in the winter, and nobody noticed the people who didn't. Then someone discovered/publicized herpes of the jolly bits, and the world lost its mind, and you practically had to stay home if you got an outbreak - people thought that looking at you would give them big crusty blisters all over their favourite parts. The interesting thing (to me) is that cold sores can be provoked by foods. If my Mom eats oranges (or other citrus), she has a serious outbreak that escapes off her lips and down her chin. Argh. Chapped lips provokes mine. In rubbing alcohol I trust: as soon as the tingling starts, press soaked cotton to the lips until your eyes water from the stinging. ( ... )

Yeah, the overreaction does seem to be pretty unwarranted!

I wonder if we'll find an actual cure at some point.

Nope - it's a virus. Viruses are tricksy buggers.
