I look forward to the LibDems being completely wiped out from the Commons at the next election. The way they've been going, they deserve it. Booting Carmichael is the next step in that process.
Ah, so the Germans don't believe in pushing their children to read. That was the fashion in the US in my childhood. Children shouldn't arrive at school already being able to read. But I learned to read at the age of 2. All my parents had to do was teach me the letters, which I pressed them to do. (I couldn't even talk yet - I was slow at that - but I knew those symbols were some kind of code, and I wanted to know that code. I kept pointing at signs and saying "Gah!" until they gave me the key.) My parents got a lot of critical looks a couple years later for having a kindergartener who could already read, but it was my decision, not theirs.

And yes, it does rather look that way. The whole thing around Carmichael has been terrible. He should have resigned as soon as things came out, or been ejected from the party if he didn't. I appreciate that he's done good things, but his position is untenable, and is actively making it harder for campaigners trying to convert people.
I think that your parents and the Germans have it right. I wouldn't be pushing either, but if children want to learn I certainly wouldn't stop them!

I have quite some friends who could read before school, others could not. But yes, the rest seems quite accurate. I mean, I am not up to date with todays practices in raising children, but from what I see ... yeah, mostly true, I guess.
