Only half? Four hours is still about two hours more than the actual content in The Hobbit, although I suppose some of the good stuff was filmed in a way that's longer than it needs to be. And hey! I've been wanting to watch about 30-40 minutes of the last movie and haven't wanted to sit through the other nineteen fucking hours of walking through New Zealand and love stories between uncharismatic side characters I don't care about, so this seems like a great setup!

I feel sure that when the final EE comes out someone will make an even shorter version.

I still want to see Topher Grace's infamous re-edit of all the Star Wars prequels into one 1h20min movie.

According to everyone who's seen it, it holds together well and cuts out so many of the bad parts that it's really good, and would only need about 15 minutes of new scenes to be perfect. But Grace never put it on the internet.

I'd be fascinated to see that too. I wish that that kind of thing was legal.

"I already own a copy of all the things that this is made of, therefore it's legal for me to watch it" should be fairly simple :->

So the Hobbit edit has dropped the Gol Guldor scenes? That's a bit of a shame, as they sort of did happen in the book (off camera), and they were quite fun, even some parts didn't make a lot of sense.

I won't miss Legolas (although a brief cameo appearance seems fair, as they did visit his home), but, I don't know, The Hobbit is severely lacking in female characters, without cutting out Tauriel.

The most severe problem I have with the films is how time seems to progress so quickly, and how some characters manage to travel huge distances in between shots. It makes the world feel a lot smaller. It was supposed to take 3 months to travel from Rivendell to The Lonely Mountain, but it felt more like 3 days.

Yeah, I had the same issue with LOTR.

Three words: Tauriel, Legolas, Gundabad.
