Cheers - I was hoping that you'd chime in.

I do agree that both segregation and a lack of hope are to blame here. Cut people off from the rest of the society, and then leave them without any belief that they can gt a better life through hard work, and you'll have some very upset people.

Yeah, they marginalized these people and then are surprised when they act marginalized.

Another thing they did. They noticed that many north african immigrants were changing their names to french names after they moved here thinking it would make it easier for them to get job interviews.

So, they made it a requirement that everyone puts their photo on their CV when they send it out - just, you know, so your company doesn't accidentally let a north african get their foot in the door.

Are there actually financial incentives to move to the suburbs, or have the immigrant poor merely been priced out of the city centres? (And don't the large housing projects date back to the 1950s and 1960s, similar to when the UK was building ugly concrete tower blocks?)

Thank you (somewhat belatedly) for posting this. It has taken me some time to read, but well worth it. It seems clear that somehow we need to make sure that our society remains open and inclusive. Somehow.

You might also like the link I posted today, which looks at their covers from the last year.

Glad you liked it too - I found the perspective really useful.

And yes, we need to keep fighting to make sure that we are as open as possible.
