DWJ anecdote is funny, and there's plenty of other testimony that Tolkien was hard to hear, especially after he got dentures (and there's film of him mumbling), he'd already finished The Lord of the Rings before she got to Oxford; he just hadn't published it yet.

Thank you!

Edit: Was he still editing it at that point? What had he moved on to?

DWJ must have arrived in Oxford in '52 or '53; she got her degree in '56. Tolkien signed the publication contract in Dec. '52 (having finished the main writing over 3 years earlier), then was occupied with revising it, which he completed delivery of in Dec. '53; then correcting proofs and then with putting together the Appendices, all of which dribbled on until July 1955. Vol. 1 had been published in July '54, and that brought in numerous letters that he responded to. By '55 he'd also returned to dealing with some of the Silmarillion papers, which had also occupied him during the 1949-52 interval in which he was negotiating with publishers for LOTR.

I hear that people with hope for their lives are less likely to want to watch the world burn.

But what would I know?

• Summer Jobs
Yeah, if there's any fucking altervative, they'll flock to it. fucking pathetic
(This one is very literally close to home. There have been a few shootings in my neighborhood this summer which seem to be teen-aged rappers redressing mutual insults.)

So what about these implants in a few months or a couple of years when they're rotflmao antiques?
