I need to know if you'd work longer hours to have more time off

Context: Amazon is apparently doing this for all permanent staff.

Personally, I'm torn. Part of me would love this, but I also find it hard to juggle things as it is, particularly around Julie and her chemo-drugs/fasting. I can see it making life harder for some people with kids (or other caring needs) too.

No. because that would mean not getting out of work until 7pm, which leaves no time for running before dinner, so I'd have to run after dinner, by which point the gym is probably shut. And that would make me a sad sad panda.

I suppose I could "solve" that by leaving bed earlier. To which a resounding fuck no.

As a postdoc, I make my own hours. I have deadlines, not timesheets.

However, if I had to clock in and out, I'd definitely rather take the longer hours in exchange for the longer time off.

I wouldn't work longer days because of the problem Sally raises, which is that my work needs enough concentration that two hours tacked onto the end of an eight-hour shift will be significantly less quality work than two hours as part of a fresh eight-hour shift; but I have worked a month of six-day weeks to get an 'extra' four days of holiday which is sort of the same thing on a bigger scale.

I'm yet another would love to work 80 % time - I used to do that and it suited me just fine. I could do odd 10 hour days but find working in a office and starting earlier than my natural inclination too tiring to do it for 4 days a week every week.

When I worked four days a week, I worked four normal days and took a 20% pay cut. I don't think I would get any more done in four ten-hour days than in four eight-hour days, so it seems like it would be ripping my employer off to expect to get paid for those extra hours.

I'm not convinced I would either.

Although I think I could if I took breaks in the day - I can generally do two hours of work between 8pm and 10pm
