Thank god I grew up on the East Coast.
The more I learn about the South and the Midwest the happier I am that I have no experience with those societies.

It's a shame the articles doesn't say things like: when they came up with the idea, and how -- did they observe the Ericsson Globe was the right sort of size to do this, or what?

But yeah, that would be a great project to be involved in!

I'm pretty sure I've read the origin story, pretty much doing what other countries (like Germany) have done, but then due to the size of the Ericsson Globe realising a new scale.
see this, including a link to a potentially larger scale one for the UK!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_System_model

Reminds me of when I had to reassure someone* who was desperately worried about their new hamster. They were really concerned because it had developed these large and unsightly lumps near its back legs, and wanted my help to take it to the vet. No vet visit was needed in the end: I was able to diagnose a serious case of ... testicles.
(In fairness, hamster bollocks are pretty unfeasibly large.)
* I am covering up their identity to spare their blushes. Of which there were many.
